Rothbard on Money: a Critical Textual Exegesis
نویسنده
چکیده
In 1998 I presented a paper which argued that no theory of money was possible—in the sense of there being a stable relationship between a few explanatory variables. The argument was based on the assumption that we were dealing with an economy of informed maximizers. The good that individuals choose to use as money depends on the solution of an optimization problem—of all available goods, which has the lowest transaction costs. Mises felicitously called the process “indirect exchange” and so it is of course governed by the same optimization as direct exchange. The choice of a money good is the solution of a maximizing query and the solution depends upon the resources available, the nature of substitutes, current technology and the flexibility of institutions. It follows that there can be no determinate solution to the question, what is money?

A Critical Discourse about Demand for Money Studies in the Iranian Economy (1989- 2000)
This paper provides a critical review of the demand for money estimation. In doing so, first we explain the main effective factors on the demand for money on the light of monetarists, which those are: transaction demand for money and opportunity cost of holding money. Then I have done a short report about the existing studies on the demand for money in the Iranian economy and have a special att...

L et me preface my comment with the following caveat: I am skeptical of the value of a scholarly journal article that attempts to critically evaluate the "canonical version" of an economic theory, particularly when the theory in question deals with a phenomenon as complex as the business cycle. Added to this is my uneasiness over the fact that the version that is chosen for criticism (Rothbard ...

Macroeconomic analysis has been relatively neglected by Austrian economists since the beginning of the Austrian revival in the early 1960s with the publication of Murray N. Rothbard’s Man, Economy, and State (1993)1 and America’s Great Depression (2000). Rothbard’s treatise contained new and improved elaborations of the Austrian theories of money, capital, and business cycles. In particular Rot...

### Chinese (Sino-Japanese) Buddhism in general, and Chan (Zen) in particular, are very different kettles of fish from Indo-Tibetan Buddhism. The Daoist influence gives it a whole new flavour. Chan certainly inherits a story about emptiness from Indian Buddhism, though. And though it may put a whole new spin on it, we take it that it preserves the structural features about emptiness which gener...
